The Tri-nation tournament series is all set to start in Bangladesh from January 4th 2010. The three teams in Asia is contesting in this tournament with the recent run fest in the recent series. The Sri lankan Cricket board dropped some players which includes batsmen Sanath Jayasuriya and Chamara Kapugedera, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and spinner Ajantha Mendis, all of whom had disappointing performances on the recent tour of India.

In fact, batsman Mahela Jayawardene, allrounder Angelo Mathews and bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando were not considered for the 15-man squad to Bangladesh, having picked up injuries in India. Sachin Tendulkar has opted out of the tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 4. He will be replaced by Rohit Sharma in the 16-man squad. Yuvraj Singh has also been included despite a finger injury scare that kept him out of four ODIs in the five-match series against Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh have omitted Mashrafe Mortaza from the squad for next month’s tri-series at home, despite his being named in the preliminary squad. Mortaza failed to recover from his knee injury and Shakib Al Hasan will lead the side with wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim as his deputy. The squad also features two former ICL players, opener Shahriar Nafees and batsman Aftab Ahmed, and a fresh face in fast bowler Shafiul Islam

The spinners had restored a measure of sanity to the proceedings after the pace bowlers, Ashish Nehra apart, were treated with utter disdain. It was left to Virender Sehwag, captaining in place of the banned MS Dhoni, to give the team some respite, having Sangakkara stumped for 46, despite Dinesh Karthik initially fumbling the take. And that success was built on soon after, with Tharanga losing his off bail in Jadeja’s opening over after an attractive 73.

Mahela Jayawardene’s poor series continued when he slugged a long hop from Harbhajan Singh to short midwicket, where Suresh Raina timed the leap perfectly to take the catch. Thilina Kandamby and Chamara Kapugedera stopped the rot for a few overs, but then Jadeja and Ishant combined to end all hopes of a large total.

The Sehwag-Gambhir pair is fast climbing the rungs among the all-time opening pairs. During the course of this stand they went past the aggregates of a couple of English pairs – Trescothick-Vaughan and Atherton-Gooch – and are 12th in terms of partnership runs by opening pairs. Among Indian pairs, Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan have scored more, but they are only 506 runs in front. Sehwag and Gambhir are also one of only 12 pairs – and the first Indians – to have two or more double-century stands for the opening wicket.

Tillakaratne Dilshan scored yet another century in his annus mirabilis. It was only impetuous shot selection from Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara that allowed India a route back into the game.

Dilshan’s life is evolving at a faster rate than when he started out a decade ago. Mostly under-used at No.6, the new leadership under Kumar Sangakkara decided he’d be better suited to open – prompted, no doubt, by his fast scoring-rate that could help the middle order. He’s probably the most unorthodox opener in Test cricket, perhaps more so than Virender Sehwag, and it’s that different approach that has troubled the bowlers and made them change their plans.
