England Squad : England Delay Team Announcement

“There are a few things we’re thinking about,” confirmed Pietersen today. “There are guys who have come on this trip who are raring to go and wanting to play and it’s just about making a decision on who the best team is to try and win a Test match and try and play positive cricket.”

Kevin Pietersen has said England don’t need to change too much for the second Test in Mohali, starting on Friday. England, he said, had performed creditably enough in Chennai to claim 70% of the Test and push India hard.

Pietersen Doesn’t Want too much of change:

“I don’t see a reason to change much,” Pietersen said on Wednesday. “We played fantastically well and if a few things had gone our way on the final day we would have won that Test and been 1-0 up so I don’t think there’s cause to start trying to change too much.”We have to look at the fact we won 70% of that fixture and then unfortunately got pipped at the post.” India were set to chase 387 and reached the target comfortably after tea on the fifth day, losing only four wickets in the process. Some personnel changes can still be effected in England’s line-up, with Monty Panesar, the left-arm spinner, under pressure to hold his place after going wicketless in India’s second innings despite the pitch taking turn. The more seamer-friendly conditions in Mohali could prompt the inclusion of either Stuart Broad or the uncapped Amjad Khan.source cricinfo.com

Team news

Despite Dravid’s form worries, India are not expected to dispense with the services of their former captain just yet, which means an unchanged side is likely to take the field in Mohali.

India : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.

England, on the other hand, have some thinking to do and won’t announce their XI until right before the start. The likely return to fitness of Stuart Broad means his inclusion is inevitable, not least to add an extra dimension to the lower-order batting. Who should miss out is a toss-up – Anderson and Harmison both produced curate’s egg performances, though Harmison, one suspects, remains the likelier man to star on what is traditionally one of India’s bouncier surfaces. Higher up the order, the time is nigh for Ian Bell to be withdrawn from the firing line, temporarily at least. If Owais Shah doesn’t play in this Test, he might as well give up on ever adding to his two caps.

England: (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), Paul Collingwood, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Monty Panesar

The last time India played in Mohali, Australia were thrashed by 320 runs. The last time England played here, the same lack of ruthlessness that undermined their challenge in Chennai allowed India to romp to a nine-wicket victory on the final afternoon. In 2001, a Mohali Test had effectively been lost on the opening day, with Harbhajan Singh taking five wickets as England went from 200 for 3 to 238 all out.

That game was played in the first week of December and conditions for this game shouldn’t be too dissimilar. Back then, India’s spinners took 15 of the 20 wickets, with Anil Kumble taking six in the second innings. For England, Richard Dawson took four wickets on debut, but ended up conceding 134 runs as well. Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann, assuming both play, will need to do considerably better if England are to avoid the sort of hammering that Australia got in October.
